As an artist, numbers help me define form and structure in my creativity. Math is the medium I use to motivate my students and make learning a part of their everyday life. Very often students who are convinced they are “not a math person” discover that all it takes is a change in attitude (and some practice) to go from being an average student to becoming a strong student, both in math and other academic subjects.
Numbers are the keys to launch the magic of eradicating the fear of math in my students. It helps students build a sense of confidence and self-esteem within themselves. Students are taught never to give up on a problem, to look for clues in the questions, to break up a problem into small sections – in short to try until they succeed. Regardless of a student’s level of intellect and expertise, my philosophy is to raise the bar on their expectations for themselves. To date we have met with resounding success.
Pottery is an artistic passion which helps me relax. When I am not teaching math, I am glazing a bowl or creating a mug.
